Our Family Dog is one-stop-shop for first-time dog owners, placing the needs of both dogs and their owners at the heart of what we do. We provide simple, accessible, non-judgmental advice to help new dog owners give their pups the best start in life.

Why is this needed? 

Studies have identified a mismatch between the expectations and reality of dog ownership, and a lack of preparation by owners prior to acquiring a dog. The main reasons cited by owners who relinquish their dogs to rescue centres are being unprepared for the commitment of dog ownership and problem behaviours with their dogs. This is often because the needs of dogs are at odds with their owners’ lifestyles. 

Our aim is to break this cycle by better preparing people for dog ownership through the provision of timely and relevant advice and support. 

Informed by behaviour change theory, our audience-centric approach allows us to better understand the needs, lifestyles and challenges faced by dog owners; so that we can create more effective and sustainable solutions to dog welfare problems. 

Our work aligns with the latest science and best practice in animal health, welfare, behaviour and training. We are governed by a set of guiding principles to support dog owners to meet the health, happiness and welfare needs of their dogs.

Our Family Dog receives an average of 25,000 unique monthly visitors and a growing social media presence. We are the only website designed specifically for first-time dog owners, offering dog care services and pet retailers a shop window to engage directly with this audience as they begin their life with a dog. As a not-for-profit organisation, all of our profits are invested back into the business.
